Mar 12, 2007 OUM, successor of UnitDim

Within the framework of the VL-e project and Food Informatics, we have constructed an ontology of units of measure, quantities, dimensions and related concepts, called OUM (Ontology of Units of Measure and related concepts). OUM is the successor UnitDim, published earlier on this site. An ontology of units of measure and related concepts is an important resource for unambiguous exchange and processing of quantitative information. In our work within the project we have run into the absence of a proper, formal, digital representation of units of measure and related concepts. In OUM, we do not claim completeness, but the ontology covers a range of the most important units of measure, quantities and the like, in various scientific and engineering application domains. The ontology, implemented in OWL, is quite comprehensive and contains over 350 units of measure and over 500 quantities. The concepts of dimensions, systems of units, measurement scales and application areas are also included in OUM.

Again, we are very interested in further review and bug reports of the ontology. For downloading OUM, click here: OUM.owl. For a descriptive document about the ontology, click here: UnitDim.pdf

We are looking forward to any comments and suggestions.

OUM is used in, a.o., the following applications/services:
- Unit and dimension consistency check
- Unit conversion (not accessible at the moment)
- Find possible units or quantities:
